Top 6 Warning Signs of Toenail Fungus

By The Foot Doc Staff · September 1, 2020

Toenail fungus or “onychomycosis” is a common problem. If you have a fungal nail infection, it can be unsightly and embarrassing.

When a fungal infection occurs under the surface of the nail, it can lead to pain, color change, and an unpleasant odor. If the infection isn’t treated, it can lead to more serious issues, including difficulty walking.

A speedy diagnosis and prompt treatment are key to curing toenail fungus. Knowing the warning signs can help you catch the problem early and prevent further nail damage.

Here are 6 warning signs.

1. Color Change

If you notice a color change in your nails, it could be toenail fungus. A fungal infection may cause your toenails to turn yellow, white, brown, or another color. It may start with a spot of discoloration and spread over time.

2. Cracking or Splitting

If your toenails seem fragile or are constantly chipping, breaking, or splitting, it could indicate toenail fungus. Small cracks in your nail or surrounding skin can also lead to infection.

3. Build-Up Beneath the Nail

It can cause your nails to become dark as a result of built-up debris between the nail plate and nail bed.

4. Foul Smell

Over time, it can develop a foul odor. At first, you may notice a mildly unpleasant smell but this can worsen without proper treatment.

5. Thickened Nails

As the toenail fungus grows, it can lead to a thickening of the nail. Your nails may look discolored, thick, or chalky.

If the condition worsens, nails may become distorted in shape, and break or crumble. See your doctor right away if you experience any unusual changes to your nails.

6. Painful Nails

An untreated fungal infection will likely get worse. In time, the nails and the surrounding skin can become tender and painful. This can make walking and performing everyday tasks difficult.

Complications

A severe case of toenail fungus can lead to permanent damage to your nails. This condition can be painful, embarrassing, and unsightly.

If you have a suppressed immune system, toenail fungus could lead to an infection that spreads beyond your feet. Diabetes patients are at greater risk for serious complications and must practice good foot care routines.
