Comprehensive Diabetic Exam
We assess sensation, circulation, skin integrity, nail health, and deformity risk — establishing your risk category and the monitoring frequency needed to stay safe.
Diabetes changes the way your feet are cared for. Our specialist team provides the specialized diabetic foot exams, wound prevention, and proactive care that dramatically reduce your risk of serious complications — including amputation.
The combination of peripheral neuropathy and poor circulation creates a dangerous feedback loop: wounds form without being felt, heal slowly, and become infected rapidly. Proactive care interrupts this cycle.
Diabetes affects the feet through two primary mechanisms: peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage that reduces sensation) and peripheral arterial disease (reduced blood flow that impairs healing). Together, they allow minor injuries — a blister, a corn, a small cut — to escalate into serious wounds before they're noticed.
In the United States, diabetes is the leading cause of non-traumatic lower-limb amputations — nearly all of which are preceded by a foot wound. The overwhelming evidence shows that regular podiatric care, patient education, and early wound intervention prevent the vast majority of these amputations.
A comprehensive diabetic foot exam includes monofilament testing (sensation), Doppler examination (circulation), inspection of skin, nails, and pressure points, and gait analysis. This exam — recommended at least annually — identifies risk level and guides preventive interventions.
Low-risk patients receive education on daily foot care and footwear. High-risk patients are placed on a more frequent monitoring schedule, provided custom diabetic footwear, and seen regularly for routine callus and nail management — because thickened nails and pressure calluses are common entry points for ulceration in neuropathic feet. Active wounds are treated aggressively with debridement, offloading, and advanced wound therapies to achieve closure before infection develops.
We assess sensation, circulation, skin integrity, nail health, and deformity risk — establishing your risk category and the monitoring frequency needed to stay safe.
Regular debridement of pressure calluses and safe nail care are essential preventive services for diabetic patients — thickened or ingrown nails and unmanaged calluses are leading causes of ulceration in neuropathic feet. Custom diabetic footwear completes the picture.
When wounds develop, aggressive debridement, offloading, advanced dressings, and close follow-up are essential to achieving closure before infection takes hold.
We collaborate with vascular surgery, endocrinology, and wound care specialists to ensure that every aspect of your diabetic foot health is addressed in a coordinated plan.
