Diagnosis & Imaging
Weight-bearing X-rays, blood work, and advanced imaging identify the type and stage of arthritis so we choose the right treatment from the start.
Arthritis in the foot and ankle doesn't have to stop you. Our specialist team offers the full range of treatment — from anti-inflammatory therapy and orthotics to joint-preserving surgery — to keep you active on your terms.
Arthritis in the foot and ankle is common, affecting joints that bear your full body weight with every step. Early intervention preserves cartilage and function — waiting typically accelerates the damage.
Arthritis in the foot and ankle occurs when the cartilage cushioning a joint breaks down, allowing bone surfaces to grind against each other. Osteoarthritis — the "wear-and-tear" type — is most common. Post-traumatic arthritis develops after a fracture, sprain, or dislocation damages the joint surface.
Rheumatoid arthritis attacks the joint lining and can affect multiple foot and ankle joints simultaneously. Gout — a form of crystal arthritis — typically strikes the big toe joint first, causing intense, sudden pain and swelling. Each type has different treatment priorities.
Weight-bearing X-rays show joint space narrowing, bone spurs, and the pattern of arthritis. Blood tests help identify rheumatoid arthritis or gout. Ultrasound or MRI may be added when early-stage cartilage changes aren't visible on X-ray.
Non-surgical management — anti-inflammatory medications, joint injections, custom orthotics, and activity modification — is effective for most patients. When the joint space is severely narrowed and quality of life is significantly impaired, joint fusion or replacement restores function with reliable pain relief.
Weight-bearing X-rays, blood work, and advanced imaging identify the type and stage of arthritis so we choose the right treatment from the start.
Custom orthotics cushion and offload arthritic joints. NSAIDs or topical anti-inflammatories reduce synovial swelling and pain for many patients.
Ultrasound-guided cortisone or PRP injections reduce inflammation and deliver concentrated growth factors directly into the joint — providing months of relief for many patients.
When conservative care no longer controls pain, fusion (arthrodesis) or joint replacement eliminates the arthritic joint across multiple foot and ankle joints while restoring or preserving function.
