Injury Classification
Ultrasound or MRI precisely grades the injury — tendinopathy, partial tear, or complete rupture — guiding the treatment decision that matters most.
The Achilles is the largest tendon in your body — and one of the most injury-prone. Whether you're managing chronic tendinopathy or recovering from a rupture, our specialist team guides you from injury to full return-to-activity.
Achilles injuries range from mild inflammation to complete rupture. Early, accurate classification of the injury determines whether conservative treatment or surgery is the fastest and safest path to recovery.
The Achilles tendon connects the calf muscles to the heel bone and bears forces of 3–8 times body weight during running and jumping. Tendinopathy (chronic overuse changes) develops gradually from repetitive loading; partial and complete ruptures often occur as sudden, traumatic events.
A ruptured Achilles — often accompanied by a sharp "pop" and sudden inability to push off — requires prompt evaluation. Whether treated surgically or with advanced bracing protocols, the evidence for full return to sport is strong when treatment starts early.
Diagnosis includes Thompson squeeze test (for rupture), palpation of the tendon, and diagnostic ultrasound or MRI to assess tendon integrity and grade the injury. These findings directly determine the treatment path.
Non-insertional tendinopathy responds well to eccentric loading programs, custom orthotics, and — for resistant cases — PRP injections. Acute ruptures are treated with early functional rehabilitation in a boot or with surgical repair, depending on patient activity level, age, and rupture characteristics.
Ultrasound or MRI precisely grades the injury — tendinopathy, partial tear, or complete rupture — guiding the treatment decision that matters most.
Eccentric calf loading, activity modification, and custom orthotics treat tendinopathy effectively in the majority of patients, restoring pain-free function progressively.
Radial shockwave pulses stimulate blood flow and collagen remodeling in the tendon — a proven non-invasive bridge between conservative rehab and more advanced interventions.
Platelet-rich plasma delivers concentrated healing growth factors directly to the tendon, accelerating repair in cases of tendinopathy and partial tears that haven't responded to exercise alone.
For complete ruptures or insertional disease resistant to all conservative measures, surgical repair restores tendon continuity with reliable return to sport for motivated patients.
"I was very satisfied with this office. Dr. O'Bryant is kind, efficient, and has great listening skills. The employees were personable at both the front desk and when getting brought to a back room. I had been to a different podiatrist last and this was a complete change."
